Birthstone Jewelry

Since the 18th century, when colorful gemstones were no longer reserved exclusively for the wealthy and high ranking members of society, the custom of wearing birthstone jewelry has been embraced by men and women of all walks of life.

The tradition of associating gemstones to months of the year goes back much further, to ancient cultures who attributed stones to signs of the zodiac, tribes of the Israelites, seasons, days and even hours. Surrounded by myth, magic and mystery, gemstones were believed to possess metaphysical properties and medicinal value. They were worn as amulets and used as talismans for luck and protection.

Birthstone jewelry is available in a variety of styles. Men and women’s rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets or combination pieces to celebrate motherhood or family ties. They are a beautiful way to distinguish one’s unique birth month and make great gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and special events. January - Garnet

Many people are surprised to discover Garnets are available in most shades except blue. The popular colors range from deep burgundy to autumn-rust, but pink, yellow and green varieties exist too. Used by soldiers in Roman times to decorate weapons and shields, Garnets were believed to promote bravery and accelerate the healing of wounds. Found on almost every continent, Garnets are available in large, high-quality specimens and are popular as faceted gemstones, cabochons and beads.

February - Amethyst

The most precious form of quartz, grape-colored Amethyst had been associated with Dionysus, the wine god in ancient mythology. The Greeks believed it could protect from intoxication or enhance ones confidence. Laws in the ancient and medieval periods had reserved purple stones and garments for royalty and clergy. Mined in several places around the world, the best Amethyst traditionally comes from Zambia and appears as a deep, vibrant purple.

March - Aquamarine

Said to prevent seasickness and promote safe passage, beautiful Aquamarine is available in pale ocean shades of greenish-blue. Today it is regarded as a symbol of hope and optimism. A durable form of beryl, it is often cut in step facets like its cousin Emerald. The best specimens are traditionally from Brazil and often available in fine, large pieces.

April - White Topaz

Although Diamond is the traditional April birthstone, White Topaz is proving to be a popular choice. The icy transparency is associated with foresight and insight and to assist in making decisions. Topaz occurs naturally mainly in shades of yellow and brown. It is carefully heated to become permanently colorless.

May - Emerald

Regarded as one of the more valuable gemstones, Emerald is prized for its rich color. Attributed with the potential to promote fertility and prosperity, they are regarded as tokens of good luck and contentment. South American jewelers are known to gaze upon an emerald crystal kept on their workbench to relieve eye stress.

June - Pearl

Known to be Cleopatra’s and Caesar’s favorite gemstone, Pearls are equally popular in Asia where they are thought to have medicinal properties. Due to their resemblance to the moon they are believed by some cultures to protect from lunacy and sleep walking. Today Pearls are frequently regarded as symbols of innocence, purity and virtue. Most of the Pearls available today are cultured (meaning they are created in farmed shellfish).

July - Ruby

A bright red variety of corundum, Ruby is second in hardness only to diamond. Large specimens are very rare and have been claimed for crown jewels in both western and eastern cultures. Believed to contain the spark of life, Ruby is associated with passion, vigor and zeal and said to foster courage. Today it is recognized as an icon of romance. The most beautiful Rubies have traditionally come from Burma, but are found today throughout south eastern Asia.

August - Peridot

Ranging in hue from light lime to rich olive, Peridot has been prized by the pharaoh’s of ancient Egypt and throughout the Fertile Crescent. Said to promote peace and harmony, it has been used to ward off envy and fear, and thought to protect children from disease. Found on most continents, Peridot is popular as faceted gemstones, domed cabochons and beads. It is a softer material and should be gently cared for.

September - Sapphire

Unless a particular color is specified, Sapphire refers to the blue variety of corundum. Esteemed for their saturated hue and durability, Sapphires have been a part of crown jewel collections in every monarchy. Princes Dianna’s engagement ring featured a large Sapphire. They are thought to instill calmness and serenity and to ward off evil and illness. The best gemstones are known as Ceylon Blue, as Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) has long been a principal Sapphire source.

October - Opal

Opals are unlike any other gemstone on earth. Rainbows of colors shimmer from within its translucent, creamy white back round. Prized varieties have a black body color. Opals can appear to change under different light sources and have therefore been thought to reflect its wearer’s mood. They are believed to heighten intuition and determination. Primarily from Australia, they are also found in Mexico. They are always cut in a domed cabochon shape, except for rare transparent orange Fire Opals which are faceted.

November - Citrine

The most cheerful variety of quartz, Citrine occurs in a range of tones from vivid lemon to honey amber. It was believed in medieval Europe to have medicinal properties and boost immunity. Today it is regarded as a symbol of hope and elation. Citrine is also said to attract success and prosperity. Large gemstone quality Citrines are relatively abundant, making them a popular choice for large jewelry pieces. They are mined primarily in Brazil.

December - London Blue Topaz

The perfect compliment to kick off the winter season, crisp London Blue Topaz has grown in popularity in recent years. Typically pale in nature, Topaz can be permanently intensified by heating and irradiation.
